Craftsmanship Beyond the Surface: The Art of Designing with Depth
A lesson in craftsmanship from my early days learning to sculpt clay continues to shape how I approach concept art today. I remember sculpting a face and realizing it looked perfect from the front but fell flat from side and back views. During a webcam critique, I was sneaky and tried to hide these flaws by curating which view my mentor would see, but my mentor’s experienced eye was on it. He pointed out that the back view needed more work and why, furthermore he also went on to explain why one of the sides looked good and the others didn’t. That moment sparked a revelation: even 2D images are perceived in three dimensions by those trained to see beyond.
Why Designing from Scratch Matters
This experience transformed my artistic process. Instead of relying solely on flat images, I began designing every detail, visible or not, in order to not “lie” about the work I was putting in anymore. By creating the inner workings and functional parts of a concept, I developed an intimate knowledge of how things operate. If I’m designing a robot, I like to design every joint, hydraulic and screw, and mandating exactly where they go, I always wanted the work to be absolutely perfect from the functional side. This deep understanding translates into believable, compelling designs that resonate not only visually but conceptually.
