Creating Realistic Costume Design for Film Characters
Every time I shared a concept design made with Marvelous Designer, I’d get twice as many people asking me to record a tutorial.
The truth is, I never found it very difficult to use.
While I was growing up, my mom worked as a remote worker and as a tailor for a large factory. I was constantly surrounded by how clothes were laid out flat in 2D before being sewn together.
Being so familiar with the way jeans, shirts, jackets, and other garments looked as flat pieces of fabric before they were assembled made Marvelous Designer much easier for me to understand, because the software mirrors how real-world clothing is constructed.
This background gave me an advantage when pitching for film or game roles involving costume design, especially in film, where concepts need to be buildable.
So the bigger question is:
In what ways can your personal experiences help you, even if they don’t seem directly related to your industry at first?
Get a journal and a pen and start brainstorming. Did you study science in college before moving to arts? You could have the upper hand when designing creatures and science-fiction props for example!
While most of my film work is under NDA, you can see more of my costume design process, insights and tutorials on the rest of my website case studies.

Each of these took about 15-30 minutes to put together in Marvelous Designer.
