Concept Art that Jumps Off the Screen

One concept I always try to keep in mind when working on these is to capture the moment of anticipation just before the action takes place. I focus on using perspective, shapes, and rhythm to communicate that feeling.

In this scene, I was mocking up a tired museum security guard at late night, who would be checking a sector of the perimeter without expecting the guys from above to come down and engage.

One thing I learned from watching Chris Cunningham's DVDs about his creative process is that depicting ideas too literally can be free, easy, and ultimately uninteresting. It's important to leave some room for the audience to interpret what might happen next. This approach creates an environment where the audience, not just the original artist, can engage with the image, making it not just an image but turning it into a dialogue expressed through brushstrokes.
